LO QUE TOCO
Date
2023
The series Lo Que Toco is an evolution of La Plasticità dell’Informe (Plasticity of the Shapeless). Here the artist started to drape the acrylic layers in an attempt to remove the canvas from paint. In Lo que toco, the artist accentuates the movement of the shape in space, through the gesture of colour which camouflages like a fabric.
The focus of this research is an observation on how the work can be further disengaged from the canonical idea of painting and its necessity to have paint on canvas. This observation of painting comes from the concept of ‘Tessiturology’, which was coined by philosopher Gilles Deleuze. According to Deleuze, the matter is a ‘garment’ which at the same time can be the main surface - where the structure is covered by an organic tissue - or that matter is the fabric itself, surrounding an abstract structure. Moreover, the artist explores the tridimensionality aspect through a tailor-made installation, which brings the artworks to lean away from the wall.
Through the Spanish title which means ‘What I Touch’, the artist wants to bring attention to touch and the feeling of familiarity towards the object and its tactile perception. At the same time a sense of bewilderment can be perceived in realizing that fabrics are layers of acrylic paint and that the surface becomes a textural shape. Different elements of the installation are interconnected, creating a membrane which allows communication between spaces inside and out the artwork.
